Focus Days

Pre-Conference focus day: Sunday 11 April 2010

08:30 - 15:30 The Evolving Role Of Imagery Within The Geospatial Enterprise

In the past, Geographic Information System (GIS) practitioners and photogrammetrists utilised separate technologies and data to conduct their work. GIS practitioners principally used imagery as map backdrops. Similarly, image analysts used GIS data sets as training set boundaries or for graphic reference. Today, this is changing through the introduction of sophisticated image analysis and geospatial tools that interoperate to support increasingly complex applications. This focus day will provide insight into the benefits that this integration of technologies provides to support image data management, discovery and exploitation.

During the morning session, we identify new tools and geospatial solutions that provide access to and analysis of imagery within the GIS environment. We will then demonstrate a comprehensive geospatial workflow that will illustrate these tools in action. Finally, we feature available solutions for automated feature identification, NITF support and full-spectrum GEOINT exploitation.

After lunch, the presentations switch to broader geospatial themes. A case study will highlight how GIS is being used to strengthen national security. We close with a summary of trends seen internationally with respect to the geospatial enterprise. Time will be provided to answer your questions and discuss GIS implementation strategies.

The world leader in the Geographic Information System (GIS) software industry, ESRI supports the design and development of geospatial applications in defence, national security and intelligence organisations. ESRI's innovative server, desktop, and mobile technology fuses geospatial data in a common operating picture to create, visualise, and analyse complex data sets in a standards-based, interoperable environment. ESRI technology enables individuals and organisations to collaborate; supports the development of analyses, models, cartography, and products; and provides mechanisms to share results throughout a community of interest. As such, ESRI software forms a critical IT infrastructure for national security organisations worldwide that use geospatial technology to support mission-critical and time-sensitive decisions. Post-Conference focus day: Wednesday 14 April 2010

08:30 - 16:00 Enhancing Regional Intelligence Infrastructure

Geospatial intelligence is increasingly important in supporting regional security and military operations. This dedicated focus day will consist of a series of masterclasses and practical demonstrations and will allow delegates direct access to a panel of experienced geospatial experts to distil the information covered during the conference and maximise the value to regional organisations.

Topics covered will include:

  • Defining the capability required to establish an effective geospatial capability
  • Infrastructure, systems and hardware required for comprehensive intelligence
  • Budgets and costs
  • Personnel and training
  • Practical intelligence collection and data handling
  • Specifics of intelligence analysis and integration
  • Hands-on demonstrations with representative table-top systems

The regional intelligence focus day will be facilitated by a panel of experts including:

Commodore Pat Tyrrell OBE (Ret’d)
Former Commandant, Defence Intelligence and Security School
and Deputy Chief Executive, Defence Communication Services Agency, UK MoD
