Geospatial information systems are widely used by government, corporates and people, thorugh the aviailability of web based GIS applications such as Google Earth. They are also however, at the heart of modern military, civil defence and emergency management services. By enabling extensive analysis they can support critical decision making by providing the right information to the right place at the right time.

Despite their massive potential, geospatial information systems tend to generally be under utilised in the region. This is mainly because of the sheer complexity and volume of the data and the lack of trained professionals needed to operate them. Furthermore, not all data captured is effectively utilised into the system, which could tremendously increase its purpose and usability.
